What conductors wear on their feet

What conductors wear on their feet

Yesterday I published a posting on my blog about the footwear that conductors wear when they are working with their clients. This was based on my own personal experience, on my own observations and discussions with other conductors over the years, and a quick chat or write-round to conductor friends and colleagues around the world done specially when I was writing this.

Do click on this link and see what I wrote.

Now I'd like to open this up here on the discussion forum. It doesn't matter who you are, a conductor, someone who has been to Conductive Education or someone who has just observed it, I'll bet you have something to say. These are the questions that I asked my friends and colleagues.

What do you wear on your feet and why?

What criteria do you have for choosing your footwear for work?

Does anyone wear open slip-on sandals? (why)

Does anyone wear mules? (slip-ons, but closed at front). Why?

Does anyone wear closed shoes, with laces, velcro or slip-ons? Why?

Do you wear insoles, foot beds, made especially for your feet?

Does anyone receive financial support from work to pay for work footwear?

Are employers interested in what conductors wear on your feet? ( health and safety for clients/or conductors, appearance)

I would love for more people to respond to these. This is NOT a questionnaire. You can answer one or all of the questions, it's up to you. All I ask is that you give a little idea of who you are, conductor, client or observer.

You can give your answer or answers here on this forum, I shall look out for them. Or you can put them in a comment at the end of my blog. If you want to write to me in private you'll find my email on my blog.

Finally, if you'd like to see my complete blog, which covers all sorts of issues about working as a conductors and about a conductor's life as well, and some of my pictures too, you can follow it on

I prefer to wear shoes that I

I prefer to wear shoes that I can slip off easily- if i need to when facilitating or demonstrating a task and usually wear crocs in the summer and usually end up taking them off completely!

However this poses some difficulites as many children in my setting use powered wheelchairs at various points in the day so anything open toed is not suitable due to health and saftey concerns and sometimes erratic driving which may result in squashed toes!

I too wear slip on shoes

I too wear slip on shoes (mules) at work but to be honest i spend most of the day in just socks as once i've taken my shoes off they don't make it back on! and we've got nice underfloor heating which is nice and warm.  I'm in various groups with kids 3-15years.  No-one has ever enquired about footwear at work, we have no money towards footwear.

I wear my mules just in work (i.e. change from my outdoor shoes when i get to work) as we're walking on floors and mats that the kids are rolling, creeping and crawling on.  This isn't enforced by work just personal preference.

hope this info is useful

Jules

    Thank you for the

Thank you for the comments.

Your help is much appreciated.

I still have one question about something I am not so sure about?

Why do some conductors feel it neccessary to work without shoes?

In some situations, especially walking with both adults and children, this could be very dangerous.

I have never seen a physiotherapist or occupational therapist without shoes when I have attended sessions either for myself or when acompanying my clients. I have never seen a teacher without shoes. I am very interested to find out why conductors feel the need to work without their shoes.

Any more comments?

I am about to post an article on my blog about type of clothes we wear on the rest of our body and why. Any comments on this subject, either before or after the posting will be greatly received.

i try to keep it clean and

i try to keep it clean and simple, it can be a shoe which is light and clean or sometime a sandal which helps to relax more, the inner has to be soft to allow relaxation and good ventilation

I prefer to wear slip on

I prefer to wear slip on shoes as well. I find that some occasions I use my feet when facilitating such as when I am walking with a teenager or adult (someone taller then a child) and I am facilitating at their upper limbs I use my foot to correct the position of their foot. This could also be done while wearing shoes but I personally find I easier to do so in sock feet. I also find it easier when walking with a child when they are walking with a ladder and if I am facilitating at their lower limbs to manuever myself along the floor when I am in my sock feet. Now if I use a stool on wheels I usually keep my shoes on.

Anyway this is how it works for me!

Very nice post you've made

Very nice post you've made here, very usuful information. thank you.
