Current Treatment Therapies for Spasticity in People with Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Disabilities: Part 1
March 31, 2009 ¦ 7:00PM to 9:30PM Eastern time
- Statement of Need
- There is a clear need for an educational activity which addresses current intervention therapies to treatment of spasticity encountered in persons with cerebral palsy and other developmental disabilities. Review of scientific peer–reviewed literature as well as clinical experience demonstrate a high correlation between severity of spasticity and morbidity and mortality in individuals with CP and other developmental disabilities.
- Both primary care as well as specialist physicians, and also nurses, physical therapists, and other health professionals need to have a better understanding of current state-of-the-art approaches to the treatment of spasticity encountered in persons with cerebral palsy, which can in turn lead the health professional to a more rational selection of treatment/management strategies and better outcomes for their patients
- Conference Goal
- The overall goal of this conference is to improve clinical knowledge, skills, and competency of those health professionals that provide services to adults and children with cerebral palsy who also demonstrate spasticity.
- Educational Objectives
- Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:
- Discuss an overview of the treatment of spasticity encountered in persons with cerebral palsy, including oral and intramuscular medications.
- Discuss the uses of selective dorsal rhizotomy, and the uses of intrathecal baclofen in the management of spasticity associated with cerebral palsy
